JFMS –CRIBS Foundation, Celebrates 33rd Nutrition Month |
|
As part of the Nutrition Month Celebration, Jose Fabella Memorial School - CRIBS Foundation Inc., conducted an On the Spot Poster Making Contest, Cooking Festival, Nutri Quiz Bee, and Jingle Rap Competition with the theme “ Sa Wastong Nutrition ni Mommy, Siguradong Healthy si Baby “. The contests were held at the CRIBS Multi-Purpose Hall on July 30, 2008.
The JFMS-CRIBS Foundation School is a duly-registered school of the Department of Education, licensed and accredited to conduct multi-grade/level classes for children with special learning needs. It was set-up for the girls in the New Beginnings program since the late 1980’s, just after the New Beginnings Program was established. Since then, it has been part of the DepEd educational system to ensure that the formal schooling for the girls undergoing healing and recovery therapy in NB, is pursued and each level successfully completed.
Victims of sexual abuse are found to suffer from a low sense of self-esteem which is further aggravated by the shame and the stigma from abuse, especially those who have chosen to file cases against their perpetrators. These victims tend to suffer in silence and this has led many of them to lose energy and motivation to study and socialize among other children within their age group. Thus, enrolling the girls in mainstream public schooling is almost always a non-option.
This special education class especially organized for the NB girls in CRIBS has four fulltime licensed teachers, all trained in special education and each assigned to a cluster of 4-7 children. The teachers follow strictly an individualized instruction plan for each of the learners utilizing the standard curriculum set by the DepEd. Formal classes take place the whole morning. Afternoons are spent for special classes or adjunctive therapy sessions conducted by instructors or therapists in the areas of music, dance, visual and performing arts. Aikido classes (designed for self-defense) are provided as well. Physical, outdoor activities, gardening and cooking classes are held regularly as co-curricular programs.
The NB Program has at present 26 girls provided with school uniforms and supplies, have access to a modest library, a science laboratory and a computer laboratory with 6 personal computers with internet access.
